SHOKEI GAKUIN UNIVERSITY

Master's Course in Public Sociology

A new type of sociology aiming at dialogue between civic society
and the regional community

The Major in Public Sociology is Japan's first graduate-level program in public sociology. The curriculum will place emphasis on the following points while looking at social issues in the post-pandemic era, such as the current status and challenges of graduate education in Japan, the founding spirit of this university and its history thus far, the experience of contributing to regional disaster recovery after the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the promotion of the SDGs.

  1. We aim to be a new kind of graduate school that provides a forum for public dialogue and the creation of collaboration
  2. Based on experience with disaster recovery accumulated in the regional community, we encourage community learning and emphasize practical workability and self-reflection at the regional community level.
  3. Contributing to empowerment and subjectivity formation to foster dialog with the knowledge people have gleaned from living and experiences and cultivating human resources who can take the lead in community development.
  4. Reforming the existing social sciences as a new type of open public sociology that promotes dialog with civic society through collaboration with environmental science, economics, management science, pedagogy, cultural anthropology, etc. (See figure)
